A Collaborative Approach to Counselling
A place to slow down and be curious.
Life may have asked a lot of you, and you've found ways to adapt, keep going, and make your way through. Those ways of coping have helped you get this far. And yet, you may still feel disconnected from yourself, wish for something more in your relationships or feel tired of carrying things in the same way.
From my office at Solis Integrative Health Centre, I offer in-person counselling in Nelson, BC, as well as secure online counselling for clients throughout British Columbia.
I see counselling as a creative and collaborative process—a place to slow down, become curious about what has shaped you, what you are experiencing now, and what might be possible. While therapy can ask us to sit with difficult things, it can also be surprising, expansive, and even joyful. I believe we each carry an innate capacity for healing, growth, and connection.
I support adults and teens in working through trauma and difficult experiences, anxiety, depression, grief, relationship and attachment concerns, life transitions, identity, shame and self-worth, while finding their way back to what matters most to them.
I’m Katie Sawyer, MACP, RCC (#25538), a Registered Clinical Counsellor with a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology. My background in Comparative Religion and Peace & Conflict Studies reflects my longstanding curiosity about how we make meaning of our lives, as well as my deep commitment to social justice.
My 20 years of teaching yoga have shaped my appreciation for the ways our experiences live in both body and mind. Together with my training in Counselling Psychology, Narrative Therapy, EMDR, parts work through TIST and somatic attachment, these experiences continue to shape how I practise.
What We Can Explore in Counselling
-
Identity, Power and Oppression
I bring a social justice lens to counselling, exploring how culture, identity, power and social systems may shape your relationships and sense of self. Together, we can consider the stories and expectations you have inherited, question where they came from and explore which ones you may want to resist, reclaim or reshape.
-
Trauma and Difficult Experiences
Trauma and other difficult experiences can continue to shape how we feel, respond and relate to ourselves and others, even long after they happened. In counselling, we can make sense of these experiences, process what remains unresolved and explore new possibilities for how you want to move forward.
-
Anxiety, Depression and Grief
We are living through a time of enormous complexity. Anxiety, depression and grief can leave us carrying more than we know how to hold alone. Counselling can make space for loss, uncertainty and emotional pain while helping you understand what you are experiencing and find ways to move through difficult periods.
-
Relationship Issues and Attachment
Earlier relationships can shape how we experience closeness, trust, boundaries and our sense of worth. In counselling, we can explore the patterns that surface in your present relationships, understand where they come from and create possibilities for greater security, choice and compassion in how you relate to yourself and others.
-
Navigating Life Transitions and Change
Life transitions can bring uncertainty, doubt and questions about who we are or what comes next. Counselling offers a place to step back, explore what this period of change means for you, reconnect with what matters most and approach the next chapter of your life with greater clarity, intention and agency.
-
Self-worth, Shame and Self-Criticism
The stories we carry about who we are can become so familiar that they begin to feel like facts: I'm not good enough. I'm too much. I should be doing better. Together, we can explore where these beliefs came from and meet the parts that carry them with greater curiosity, understanding and compassion.
